B and D Wood Decor was born out of our combined passion for crafting and decorating (Barbara) & woodworking.(Derek).
We moved to Mount Olive, NJ in 2015, (if you are local to the area you may already know Derek as Silver Hammer Handyman
Barbara spent 35 years in the corporate world and was ready for a new direction and focus. We decided to start B and D so we can spend time creating together.
SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS!
We believe our creations are just as good if not better than what you can find in the big stores.!
Not to mention our creations:
Derek always had a love for building something in his shop. His father owned his own carpentry business and Derek grew up helping on weekends and after school. He now has his own business, silverhammerhandyman.com. You would think at the end of the week he would want to relax but he is always in the shop. Over the years he has made radiator covers, headboards, tv stands, desks, cutting boards, etc, for family, friends and customers. It is definitely his passion that brings him happiness.
As for me, I was a cooperate girl all my life. Then in 2016, I developed a chronic pain condition. I saw countless doctors up and down the East Coast trying everything I could including multiple surgeries to improve my quality of life.
During this time my mom was my biggest cheerleader. She encouraged me to never give up but at the same time to be realistic in my expectations and accepting things I might not be able to change. She saw me struggle trying to be the person I used to be and the person others expected me to be. My mom told me I had to let go of that person or I would never be at peace...I would never find happiness.
In 2019 I lost my mom. She passed away unexpectedly during a family vacation. We lost our dad years earlier and as hard as that was, and as much as I miss him, losing my mom destroyed me. There really is no love like the love of a mother.
I grieved her loss, I finally was able to let go of the old me. It was what she always wanted me to do.Losing my mom gave me the strength and determination to find the peace and happiness she always wanted for me.
I finally put myself, my health above work, above others expectations of me. It's been a difficult journey and it was important I spent more time just doing things that made me feel good, made me feel useful,
Over the years Derek would cut me wood and I would make decor for our home or for family and friends...on occasion we would sell seasonal items. And when my mom was here, no matter what I created I couldn't wait to call her and tell her about it or show it to her when she came to visit. When she passed away, I found myself talking to her and telling her all about the things I made and how I wish she was here to see it. I can't explain it but I know she hears me. I know she sees me. And that brings me peace and happiness!
We are big animal lovers! We have 3 rescues...our dog Sara (pictured here on one of our road trips) and our cats Sadie and Ashley. (pictured below)
We support and volunteer at local animal shelters Pet Adoption League (PAL) in Hackettstown and 11th Hour Rescue!
A portion of the proceeds for any item for sale in the Animals Are the Best section in our store will go the these rescues.
